
Rainflower

Rainflower is a sustainable multifunctional rainwater collector. Its central aim is reducing freshwater withdrawal and energy used in water systems, namely distribution and treatment.
When inactive, the collector’s cover is stored in an aboveground column leaving the urban space free. When active, the collector’s cover springs up as a flower, harvests rainwater and provides shelter.
Rainflower’s structure allows both aboveground and underground water storage. The illustration below is for the latter case. Harvested water can be reused for plant irrigation, food washing and recreation. Collected rainwater has lower level of pollutants because the Rainflower is kept closed when unused. Rainflower is responsive to rainfall and strong winds.
Rainflower is a sustainability symbol that raises people’s awareness of water as a natural resource and food production as a resource-intensive process. Moreover, Rainflower is aesthetically appealing and so it increases citizens’ sense of belonging to renovated and new residential areas. These social benefits are very important in cities seeking social cohesion.

Specifications
Rainflower’s cover is hexagonal with each side measuring 7.5 m. Its total area is 146 m2. The height of the Rainflower’s column varies between 4 and 6 m. The Rainflower cover is made of a waterproof fabric and its colour depends on the urban setting.
Estimated accumulated annual water volume for 3 units is 327 000 litres, considering an average annual precipitation depth in Denmark of 745 mm. Three Rainflowers could therefore supply water flushing and water laundry for 30 and 63 residents in Denmark, respectively.

Display
The display plugin is an outdoor advertising box with lighting system and a circular rotating display. It gives an appealing platform for showing advertising right in the urban environment. The construction is resistant to water and snow.

Stairs
The stairs plugin is made with purpose of reducing the cost of underground tanking by providing a more dimensional dynamic area with tanking within the staircase instead of underground

Light
The light plugin is providing LED-lighting underneath the Rainflower at night automatically adjusting the light intensity and with numerous of different appealing colours bringing a pulsating environment
